Competition Lead

Summary and Background Information

GovHack is the largest open-data Hackathon in the Southern Hemisphere and run almost entirely by volunteers across Australia and New Zealand. It has been operating for ten years and brings together people from all walks of life, to deliver solutions to community issues by hacking, mashing and remodelling Government Open Data.

The GovHack Competition Team Lead ensures the competition is a fair and equitable process for all competitors The Lead is responsible for setting the competition themes and direction and ensuring all people, processes and systems are ready throughout the competition lead in, weekend, and judging.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities for team roles available

As the team leader you will be responsible for managing a small team (approx. 2-8 people) to assist you in carrying out the following tasks, in conjunction with the Operations Lead:

  • Planning and coordinating the GovHack competition in 2024 (6 – 8 September 2024)
  • Provide insights and new ideas for the 2024 competition
  • Responsible for the set up of the Competition Framework and Judging systems
  • Liaising with the Technology Team to:
    – Ensure all systems are ready for the GovHack competition,
    – Liaise with the hackerspace development team to ensure the competition elements are implemented and tested to meet the needs of hackers and judges,
    – Ensure all infrastructure and objectives of the competition are met,
    – Test all systems and ensure they’re ready during the setup phase, competition phase and judging phase.

Requirements

  • Proven personal communication skills
  • Competition management experience
  • Past GovHack or a similar large scale Hackathon experience 
  • Proven time management skills
  • Proven leadership or management experience
  • Assist in verifying competition entries
  • You will be required to attend our weekly video conferences (Thursday 6.30PM AEDT).

Support and Supervision

This role will be a part of the International Operations Team and will be responsible for providing progress updates and representing their team and activity. You will work closely with the Operations Lead.


Time Commitment

The time commitment required over the duration of the year will differ greatly depending on the phase of the project, however it is anticipated that a minimum of 2 hours a week will be required.

In the lead up for the competition weekend (August) you will be expected to work around 4 hours per week as this is the busiest period (Jun – Aug). During the post-competition phase (Sep – Dec) the hours required will decrease whilst you will assist with judging, working on GovHack’s internal systems and projections for the next year.
